Summer is a time when students fill their days with activities such as beach hangouts, parties, travelling, and, most popular, lazing the day away. Though it might be fun to do at first, does doing these activities ever get old and stale? Repetitive even? Fear not! We have plenty of ideas.
A good place to start would be applying for a Student Clipper Card. If you do decide to travel, you will most likely be taking Bart or AC Transit, which go all the way from North San Jose to Balboa Park, SFO to Antioch, Richmond to San Jose, and even to Dublin/Pleasanton.
Using your youth card, you could visit Planet Fitness and get a free summer membership. Summer passes are available to teens from June 1 to August 31. It is a convenient way to develop good fitness habits or just kill time.
If you’d like to focus on supporting the community, you could volunteer at an animal shelter. Most shelters are understaffed, so any help would be greatly appreciated. By working at a shelter, you get volunteer hours, which are beneficial for Health Academy students, who need to meet the 50 volunteer hours requirement to graduate.
Recently, more volunteer events have been popping up, such as Lincoln Summer Nights. Many people come out to enjoy the Lincoln Summer Nights carnival-like experiences, which include music, dance, sports, performances, and games! This event also offers volunteer hours to students like you who might want to help out.
You can also sign up for summer classes! This summer could be a good time to improve your academic record. You can get more credits for your elective category. There are many classes offered by Peralta Community College for free, such as math, language, and various electives. These classes are opportunities. You might need to borrow some books to study for these classes, which means you’ll need a library card, but did you know that signing up for an Oakland Library Card has more benefits than just books? You can stream movies, rent DVDs, and even gain free or cheaper access to the SF MOMA with the Discover & Go program. There are many benefits to having an OPL library card.Â
Summer should be more than just spending time indoors or repeating the same routine everyday. Students can utilize their break to spend more time exploring the outdoors, improving their health, supporting their community, and strengthening their academic records. From using Student Clipper Cards, to volunteering, and from Enrolling into free college courses to utilizing the benefits from an Oakland Public Library card, there are many ways to stay productive, healthy, and educated this summer. An impactful summer is better than a “lazy” summer.
