Last month, Tech’s girls soccer team avenged last year’s disappointing championship match loss to LPS Hayward in a suspenseful 100-plus minute game that ended with overtime. Co-captain Nina Fitzgerald-Boes scored the concluding goal in the top left corner after eight stressful rounds of penalty kicks. As this was her final season on the team before graduating, she said she felt “really glad to finish it off this year, I’m so happy.”
In the week prior, Tech took a double digit win in the quarterfinal against Fremont High and beat out our rival, Skyline, in the semis. Jade Nakama, co-captain, attributes these wins to “how much camaraderie the team built this year.” She said that although “last year the team felt somewhat disconnected, this year I think we really grew to be more of a team.”
After moving onto the regional bracket, Tech overcame Live Oak 4-0 in the quarterfinals, but finally ended their winning streak to Lowell in the closely-matched semifinal. After playing several consecutive games with an excess of player injuries, the team was proud to have even made it to regional playoffs and take the CIF Oakland Section title. Co-captain Kylie McDonough, who’s been on varsity since her freshman year, said, “we’re so proud of our team for showing up for our teammates and putting their full effort into every single game, especially near the end of the season competing for the championship with a lot of injuries, the team preserved and won.”
