It is February, and that means all things pink and red. But, Valentine’s might not be what everybody wants to think about right now, which is why a preferable alternative is Galentine’s. The holiday was started by the show “Parks and Recreation,” and now the celebration of sisterhood is embraced. Since its inception in 2010, many have adopted it into their yearly celebrations with traditions as little as flower exchanges to whole vacation getaways.
Girls opt for this option as a result of the isolation that Valentine’s Day can bring. Instead of worrying about being the perfect partner or being left out of the romance, relaxation and laughter is provided at every Galentine’s. At its core, the holiday is an expression of female empowerment, strength and independence during such a romantic time.
“With more than 200,000 TikTok videos using the hashtag ‘Galentine’s,’ the day’s popularity has increased over the last few years,” states Eleri Griffiths in a BBC article.
The skyrocketing popularity of Galentine’s Day has inspired women to prioritize friendship and self care. Even so, that has not stopped companies from bandwagoning on the celebration and using it to their advantage. Brands now promote their products aimed at this specific demographic, hoping to capitalize on consumerism. In doing so, they underestimate the impact this holiday has on many and how it surpasses materialistic value.
Getting together is not about the tangible aspects but rather the memories that are created, which is why I remember this time of year with such fondness. Since freshman year, my friends and I have exchanged Galentine’s-themed gifts. After deciding it was best to set a budget, the gifts consisted of heartfelt items tied to shared memories rather than brand-name items.
“Yes, I do [think female friendships are helpful],” states Meliah, a student from Tech. I say that because any friendships are good friendships, and if they’re uplifting, then they will be very good.”
This is why Galentine’s Day embodies the love languages, serving as a holiday where we can cherish and shower each other with affection. The role these friendships play in each other’s lives has been astoundingly underlooked. Galentine’s pays tribute to the core moments these friendships have endured.
What started out as fiction has now blossomed into a beautiful reality of independence, strength, and appreciation. Sisterhood in its truest form is honored on Galentine’s Day, through the many ways girls choose to celebrate. Whether you are single or in a relationship, all women can participate in the love found in laughter and chosen family.
