The Death of Queen Elizabeth II and the British Monarchy

It has been recently publicized that Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has passed away on September 8, 2022. The day of the Queen’s death was then followed with a mourning period that consists of twelve days. During this time, the Queen’s body will be moved to Buckingham Palace, from Balmoral, and preparations will be made for the state funeral. This public news had shaken the world and brought grief to King Charles III and the rest of the Royal Family. After her death, The Prince Of Wales became king and is expected to address the nation as soon as possible. We have all heard about the British Monarchy and their rules of governing. We have been familiarized by how it works and the roles of the royal family thanks to the press, but it is important to also take note of the disadvantages that come with the British Monarchy.

Royalty promotes habits of social conservatism in Britain’s society. This encourages people to believe that the aristocracy rightfully dominates society because of its intrinsic superiority rather than the democratic way of basing important decisions by the will of the people. Rarely do the governed have a say in who becomes their ruler since the British Monarchy simply passes its position of privileges to its next bloodline, and this does not guarantee competency coming from the leadership. There have been arguments made against the British Monarchy. They claim that its form of government reduces chances of diversity existing in the monarchy, the appointment of hereditary heads of state as undemocratic, inequitable and elite-based, and finally, the institution’s structure encourages one person to stay in power. Thus, a lot of controversy and criticisms comes up when it comes to the British Monarchy.
